CASA DA ESTANCIA, GIRLS' ORPHANAGE
Recife, Pernambuco 2006
The girls ranged from age 5 to 16. From my understanding, at age 18, they are required by law to leave the orphanage. I was told I was not allowed to photograph them. The few images bearing faces were taken covertly, since the presence of the camera was alluring at best.
Some of the girls had been there most of their lives. Almost all had living parents, but who were not able to take care of them. There were 11 girls. A few came and went in the three weeks I volunteered there. This place was my life for those weeks and those girls were the most amazing girls I will probably ever meet.
